Comprehensive Homebirth Resource List

Approximately 1% of babies in the United States are born at home. Homebirth can be for nearly anyone.

Home Birth Benefits

Many parents choose home birth because they feel it creates an experience superior to the medically managed model of care. Some people prefer the comfort and convenience of avoiding a trip to the hospital; they may want to avoid medical interventions that may occur with medically managed labor; and they may prefer the midwifery model of care, that emphasizes informed consent and a more "hands-off" approach to the labor process.

Safety Statistics

While there are many different opinions regarding the safety of home birth, the actual statistics show that home births, for healthy mothers and pregnancies, are no more dangerous than hospital births. Home births have relatively low hospital transfer and C-section rates, and there are fewer reported injuries to mothers and babies during childbirth. The lack of medical interventions reduce their associated risks, such as complications from epidurals and other drugs, and infections from incision sites.

Cost / Insurance Options

Home births can cost anywhere between $3000 - $7000, depending on your geographic area and the midwife you choose. Even though it is far less expensive than a hospital birth, health insurance companies are often reluctant to cover home births. Fortunately, many families do report at least partial reimbursement for home birth midwifery services. Some companies will even agree to make an exception and add a home birth midwife as an in-network provider. Some even cover doula services. It usually requires some persistence, but the payoff can be worth it.
